'The morning light streams in from our landing': Isobel shares her carefully curated master bedroom

‘I knew I wanted dark green walls.. and the design went from there.’

EACH WEEK, WE ask someone based in Ireland with a passion for interiors to share one photo of their favourite spot in their home.

When Isobel Waine moved into her home in south-west Dublin, a 1970s semi-d, the property was in need of some updating.

“Although it had been well looked after over the years, very little had been updated since it was first built,” says Isobel.

“We basically gutted it. My husband is very handy and did a lot of the work, and then I was across all the design decisions.”

In the last couple of years I have been trying to put more personality into the house, which is a slow process when you’re sticking to a strict budget, but I also enjoy the challenge of trying to make it look stylish without spending much money.

This week, Isobel (@izzys_home) chatted us through her favourite spot: her home’s master bedroom.

What do you love about this part of your home?

This photo shows the view from my side of the bed when I wake up each day. As the morning light streams into the bedroom from the landing, I have a clear view of the gallery wall that goes all the way from the top of the stairs down to the hallway.

Looking at the photos on that wall makes me smile because they’re all so personal: a mixture of family photos, travel posters from places that are special to us, my husband’s football memorabilia, paintings by my granny, my own paintings and some quirky prints I found online.

What’s your favourite object in here and why?

It has the be the mid-century inspired dresser from the furniture label West Elm. We bought it last year when we finally got around to decorating this room, and I fell in love with it. The warm wood against the dark walls is so satisfying, and it has a simple elegance that is just timeless.

My other favourite object is the hat on the wall. It may not be the most stylish hat in the world, but my husband bought it for me on our honeymoon so it has a lot of sentimental value.

What was your inspiration when you were putting this room together?

There wasn’t anything in particular that I can remember inspiring this room. I did look at Pinterest at the start for some general inspiration, and from early on I knew I wanted dark green walls. I wanted somewhere peaceful and calm, and the design went from there.

Be honest: how much tidying did you do before taking this photo?

Our bedroom is actually the tidiest room in the house, but I still had to move the soggy towels that were hanging over the banisters, run outside and cut some foliage from the wintry garden to put into the vase, make the bed and move a pile of cushions from the chair.

Is there anything in here you’d like to change?

As the bedroom is a recently completed space, I am still very happy with it. However, I would really like to change up the colour of the landing walls. I picked the colour very quickly from a paint chart while in hospital, having just given birth to my first child, so it wasn’t the most considered decision! I’d either like a fresher white or something completely crazy.
