'It's a simple backdrop with pops of colour': Laura chats us through her serene sleep space

‘I’ve been collecting artwork and furniture for our home since I was a teenager.’

EACH WEEK, WE ask someone based in Ireland with a passion for interiors to share one photo of their favourite spot in their home.

Laura Ferguson lives in a five-bedroom detached home in Co Donegal with her partner David.

“I’ve always had an interest in interiors,” says Laura. “I’ve been collecting artwork and furniture for our home since I was a teenager.”

This week, Laura (@little_grey_living) chatted us through her favourite spot: her bedroom.

What do you love about this part of your home?

I love this room as it’s a calming and restful space. I achieved this by using a simple, muted colour palette of greys and whites and added cosiness by layering soft furnishings in pastel accent shades. I also introduced colour in artwork and objects placed around the room.

What’s your favourite object in here and why?

The print above our bed is from the Earagail Arts Festival which takes place every summer here in Donegal. It’s by the artist Dermot Flynn, whose style of illustration I love.

What was your inspiration when you were putting this room together?

When we were deciding on the interiors for our home I spent hours playing around with materials, matching colours, patterns and textures and seeing what worked well together. I have always been inspired by Scandinavian design, their style is so effortless and that was always in the back of my mind. My rule is to have a simple neutral backdrop with pops of colour through artwork, objects and textiles. You can easily change it up that way by adding a new throw and cushions for example.

Be honest: how much tidying did you do before taking this photo?

I won’t lie, I’m an absolute neat freak so I didn’t actually have to do too much tidying. I try to keep this room clutter free. We’re fortunate enough to have a separate dressing room so this space can easily be kept tidy as there’s no clothes or shoes scattered around.

Is there anything in here you’d like to change?

I’m happy with this space for now but I constantly have new ideas for our home. I’m addicted to Pinterest, which is really useful during the planning stage but you can also see too much. I would love to collect more good quality textiles. We have McNutt of Donegal nearby, so I have some of their beautiful rugs around the house.
