'Our tiler loved us!': Noelle shares her eye-catching kitchen with herringbone flooring

Accents of gold and pastels add drama to this open plan space.

Each week, we ask someone based in Ireland with a passion for interiors to share one photo of their favourite spot in their home.

This week, Noelle Sloane (@noellesloane) in east Cork chatted us through a room that’s “without a doubt” a favourite part of her home: the recently finished kitchen.

Noelle and her boyfriend Paul built their “dream home” together in 2019, with the help of a local builder. The finished product is an airy three bed bungalow overlooking the sea, and since moving in last December the pair have been putting the finishing interior touches to each room, with a particular focus on their kitchen.

What do you love about this part of your home?

We rented in a dark, tiny house with almost no counter space for the past six years and this kitchen is the exact opposite! It is full of light and feels so open. We have a patio area on either side of the kitchen, one looking over the sea and one on the south facing side for outdoor dining.

What’s your favourite object in here and why?

I adore the little pops of gold around the kitchen – particularly our gold tap and cupboard handles. Another big favourite is the floor tiles. They are a wood-effect porcelain tile that we had put down in a herringbone pattern (yes, our tiler loved us!). I just think they have such a wow factor and work well with the kitchen itself.

Be honest: How much tidying did you do before taking this photo?

If anyone tells you they didn’t tidy before taking a photo like this, they are lying! I am a little bit of a clean freak anyway but I’ll admit I went into overdrive for this particular photo. Luckily the novelty of cleaning a new house hasn’t worn off yet!

Is there anything in here you’d like to change?

The kitchen isn’t finished yet, so there are a few bits I’d still like to add. I’m on the hunt for shelves for the left corner, and at the moment we have a dining table with no chairs -that’s hopefully going to change soon. We really took our time making design decisions, and because of that, we’re happy with it all.
