Poll: When did you last attend a protest march?

Thousands of people attended a cost-of-living march in Dublin on Saturday,

LAST SATURDAY SAW one of the largest protest marches in Ireland in recent months, as thousands descended on Dublin city centre to call for help from the government during a cost-of-living crisis.

Dozens of campaign groups, from students to pensioners, carers to climate activists, flooded O’Connell Street before marching to Merrion Square, to demand action for those struggling to make ends meet.

Organisers of the march made no secret of their hope that Dublin would see a march of people not seen since the Right2Water marches of 2015.

So, today we’re asking: When did you last attend a protest march?

Poll Results:

Never (5587)
More than a decade ago (1894)

@Jack Johnson: poor excuse unless you’re working weekends also, in which case, poor you! Most protests would be on a weekend.

@Sean Stevenson: I imagine many of us have something better to do with our weekends, than go anywhere near Dublin.

@Jack Johnson: How ironic of you to presume that only unemployed can afford the time to protest – Ireland’s biggest protest (350k people) was PAYE workers protesting their unfair share of the tax burden – 20th January 1980.

Sinn Fein played a blinding solo with a dignified but powerful tempo, and Father Mc brought his usual (but never underappreciated) warmth, humanity and everyman/Dad approach that not even Pavorotti’s ‘Nessun Dorma’ could have upstaged At the end, and sadly it did end, we all filed off hither and tither – the promise of a return show in November, if the government remix not right. I heard one fellow protester/supporter say to another as we turned a corner and beheld people sitting and drinking coffee, walking to and fro with shopping bags – ‘look at that….back to normal life’. His female companion softly replied ‘What is normal life anymore?’.

I attended both speeches Saturday. The sound system could have been better at Parnell square unless up close. Well organized overall though. Contributors kept it concise – some great points made (will points be heard?) The Leinster house speeches rolled out the big bands – (the warm up acts opening the show at Parnell square) with PBP acting as MC bringing their charasmatic indi-flair…

So if the majority of Journal readers never go on protest marches, then either they are very happy with the status quo or they are too lazy to do anything to change it. Either way, they get what they deserve.

We used to be able to protest properly – look up 20th January 1980 – 350k PAYE workers protested in Dublin over sharing almost all of the tax burden. I didn’t go (I was 11), but I remember it well – the news reports were pretty dramatic-looking.
