Man (40s) hospitalised with serious burn injuries after fire at Stryker facility in Cork

The Health and Safety Authority has launched an investigation into this afternoon’s incident.

A MAN HAS been seriously injured after a fire at a medical devices manufacturer in Co Cork. 

Stryker’s facility in Carrigtwohill in east Cork was evacuated in the course of the incident at an industrial unit on the grounds. 

A second person was also brought to hospital for treatment following the fire at the Anngrove building in the IDA industrial estate in the town, according to the company.

Gardaí and emergency services were alerted at lunchtime to the blaze and the injured man, aged in his early 40s, was rushed by ambulance to Cork University Hospital and the scene has been preserved for examination.

“His injuries are understood to be serious,” gardaí said.

Fire crews from Midleton remain at the scene the scene. 

The Fire Service told The Journal that it believed that the man had “suffered burns while working on equipment” on the roof of an industrial unit.

Its statement added that the fire has since died down and is now out. 

When contacted, the Health and Safety Authority told The Journal it has been notified of the fire and has commenced an investigation into the incident.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Stryker said that two people in total were transferred to hospital following the incident, with all others present evacuated from the site.

“This afternoon there was an incident at our Anngrove facility which was managed by our emergency response team with support from local emergency services,” the spokesperson said.

“Two people were transferred to the hospital and all others were safely evacuated from the facility.

“We’re committed to a safe and healthy work environment at all of our facilities. We’re working closely with the authorities to investigate the incident.”

Local Sinn Féin TD Pat Buckley said his thoughts were with the families of the two people hospitalised, and demanded that the HSA carry out a “thorough investigation” of the site

The company employ over 4,100 people across six sites in the county as well as having further operations in Limerick and Belfast.
