1.In our lead story this morning, Niall O’Connor reports on how the Irish government is funding a programme building prefabricated houses for displaced Ukrainians so they can return home.
Two million homes in Ukraine have been destroyed following the invasion by Russia – but the United Nations project is helping rebuild the devastated lives of those affected.
The programme of prefabricated houses is underway in battle scarred parts of the country to provide a chance for people who saw their homes destroyed by Russia’s invasion to rebuild their lives.
2. A man who suffered massive burns during a bomb attack during the Troubles has said that he missed out on vital medical treatment because he was terrified that he would be sexually abused for a second time by paedophile surgeon Michael Shine.
Dundalk-born musician Peter O’Connor was a 19-year-old student when he was caught up in the loyalist bombing in Dundalk in 1975, during which two people lost their lives and 20 people were injured.
The DPP did not charge Shine on foot of Peter’s statement but, just like in the case of 200 other victims, he was awarded redress during civil proceedings.
3. Tim Walz accepted the nomination for vice president in a Democratic National Convention speech that blended optimism with fierce critiques of Republican rival Donald Trump.
The Minnesota Governor, little known before his selection by Vice President Kamala Harris, thanked the packed arena in Chicago.
“We’re all here tonight for one beautiful, simple, reason: We love this country,” Walz said. “Thank you for bringing the joy to this fight.”
4. Heat-related deaths in Ireland could increase to as many as 1,413 per year this century under high levels of global warming due to climate change, a new study has found.
The new research has found that deaths due to heat in Europe could triple overall by 2100 as climate change worsens, with the exact impact depending on how much global temperatures rise due to climate change in the coming years.
5.The HSE has issued an urgent alert to people who were on board a bus from Dublin Airport to Clonmel in Co Tipperary last Saturday, as well as to passengers on board an Aer Lingus flight from Naples.
Any passengers who travelled on this flight or bus route at this time should check their measles vaccination.
A GP or hospital clinician should also be immediately contacted for advice on behalf of any passenger on this bus journey or flight who is a pregnant woman, immunocompromised, or under the age of 12-months-old.
6. Education minister Norma Foley has outlined plans for a ban on mobile phones, saying there “should be no access to mobile phones until the school day is over” going forward.
Writing for The Journal today on how it can happen, Foley believes it will significantly “improve the learning environment in schools by reducing distraction” and reduce the risk of cyberbullying.
7. Gráinne Seoige is expected to submit her name for the Fianna Fáil Galway West seat ahead of nominations for the constituency closing at the close of business today.
Seoige is expected to be one of at least four people to seek a nomination in the five-seater constituency.
8. The search will resume for the remaining person missing after a luxury yacht sank in a storm off the coast of Sicily following the discovery of five bodies inside the wreck.
9.A SPECIES OF Whale that is near extinction has been spotted off the coast of Donegal.
It’s the first time the North Atlantic Right whale has been spotted in Ireland since the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group was established in 1990.
