Gardaí launch murder investigation into death of woman, 50s, at Cavan home

A man, aged in his 60s, was seriously injured. A man in his 30s has been arrested.

GARDAÍ HAVE LAUNCHED a murder investigation after a woman’s body was discovered at the scene of a ‘serious incident’ at a home last night in Cavan.

Gardaí were alerted around 9.30pm yesterday evening to the incident, which occurred at a home in a rural area near Ballyconnell, Co Cavan.

“A woman (aged in her 50s) was pronounced deceased at the scene,” a garda statement said.

A man aged in his 60s was seriously injured and was brought to Cavan General Hospital for treatment. He is in a serious but stable condition, gardaí said.

Gardaí have arrested a man in his 30s at a separate location. He is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a Garda Station in the Co Cavan area.

The woman’s body has been brought to Cavan General Hospital for post-mortem examination and the scene has been preserved for technical examination by the Garda Technical Bureau.

“The investigation is being led from an incident room at Cavan Garda Station. A Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) and Family Liaison Officer (FLO) will be appointed in due course,” the garda statement said.

“Investigating Gardaí are appealing for witnesses and those with information to come forward.

“Anyone who travelled in the area of Kilnavert, Ballyconnell, Co. Cavan, last night, Saturday 11th January 2025, between 8.30pm and 9.30pm, is asked to provide Gardaí with any available camera footage, including dashcam recordings. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Cavan Garda Station on (049) 436 8800, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”
