As Twitter hits 500m users, founder warns over 'unhealthy' usage

Biz Stone said he found coming to the site and then leaving again “much healthier engagement”.

TWITTER CO-FOUNDER Biz Stone has told the site’s 500 million users that they should not spend hours on it because it can become “unhealthy”.

His warning came as the micro-blogging site this week passed the 500 million user mark as it plays an increasingly pivotal role in everything from popular culture to politics worldwide, including here in Ireland.

Stone, the current creative director at Twitter, told a business conference in Montreal, Canada that using Twitter for hours at a time “sounds unhealthy”, the Guardian reports.

“I like the kind of engagement where you go to the website and you leave because you’ve found what you are looking for or you found something very interesting and you learned something,” he is quoted as saying this week.

“I think that’s a much healthier engagement. Obviously, we want you to come frequently,” the man known as @Biz on Twitter added.

Stone also said that there were currently no plans to increase the site’s current 140 character limit, the Montreal Gazette reports. He is also quoted as saying that Twitter is a good way for companies to connect with their customers.

“I think brands are using it to really build trust with consumers,” he said.
