Getting older: The average age of Irish cars is still increasing

The average privately-owned car in Ireland is 8.85 years old.

NEW DATA FROM Cartell.ie shows that the age of cars in Ireland continues to rise – while the total number of cars on the road appears to have levelled off.

Every January since 2000, Cartell.ie has tracked the average age of private vehicles in Ireland. Analysis of this data shows that between January 2015 and January 2016 the average age of the overall fleet has risen by 40 days.

This is despite the fact that fleet ageing had slowed markedly last year – recording just an 11-day rise between January 2014 and January 2015.

In July 2016 the average age of the fleet stood at 8.85 years – significantly older than the level in July 2012, which was 8.13 years. However, year-over-year, the age of the fleet in July 2016 is marginally lower than the July 2015 figure of 8.86 years.

John Byrne, Legal and Public Relations Manager for Cartell.ie, says:

The age of the fleet is continuing to creep upwards based on this analysis. The age fluctuates throughout the year as cars enter and leave the fleet but analysing the age in January of every year since 2000 shows our cars are still getting older.

Interestingly, the size of the private fleet is levelling off. As of July 2016, the size of the private fleet is 2.23 million vehicles, which is the same as the size of the fleet 12 months ago.

Furthermore, while more new cars have been sold this year than last year, there is no indication it is yet impacting on the overall age of the fleet.
