Gardaí are investigating the incident which took place last weekend

Man arrested in connection with incident where baby was left on side of road after car stolen

The incident took place in Dublin 7 last Sunday.

LAST UPDATE | 25 Aug 2022

A MAN IN his 40s has been arrested in connection with a car-jacking in Dublin, which saw a baby abandoned on the side of the road in Dublin.

The incident took place last Sunday, 25 August at St Attracta Road in Cabra, shortly after 7pm when a car was taken from a family by a man.

A child was in the car at the time but went unnoticed by the man until shortly after.

The child was found shortly after uninjured and did not need medical treatment, according to gardaí.

Sources have said that the parents had gone back into the house to get an item they forgot to load before they left.

Gardaí believe that the alleged car thief was walking past and the theft was an opportunistic incident. A child got out of the car but an infant was still in the back seat.

Sources have said the car was driven a short distance down the road before the alleged thief had spotted that the baby was still in the car.

The driver spun the car around and returned to the general vicinity of the house – he then removed the nine-month-old from the vehicle and fled the scene in the car.

Gardaí have yet to recover the car and said the investigation is ongoing.

A Garda spokesman said: “Gardaí are investigating the unauthorised taking of a vehicle that occurred on St Attracta Road, Dublin 7, shortly after 7pm on Sunday 21st August 2022.

“An infant passenger that was in the vehicle at the time was found shortly after uninjured.”

According to Gardaí, the man is currently being detained in Mountjoy Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

With additional reporting from Niall O’Connor.
