Next month, some people will move into these temporary modular houses in Dublin

“Snagging is expected to conclude during April 2016″.

AFTER HITTING A number of bumps in the road, families are set to move into modular housing in Dublin’s Ballymun from next month.

The 22 units had been originally slated for completion before Christmas, with the the builders having taken on a ‘rapid build’ contract from Dublin City Council (DCC).

However, before this could happen protests at the site pushed back the completion date – with the council alleging that threats to burn out machinery had been made.

As January rolled around Western Building Systems – the firm contracted for the job – said that bad weather and changes to design meant further delays.

Now – more than three months behind their originally scheduled completion date – the units are set to become available.

In a statement this evening DCC has said that the houses are “substantially completed” and that “snagging is expected to conclude during April 2016″.

It has emphasised that the properties are a temporary measure and are being used to provide accommodation for families currently stuck in commercial hotels.

Those moving into the homes will be selected by DCC’s Homeless Central Placement Service who will makes its decision based on family support in the area and need to access local schools.

Currently there are 790 families in emergency homeless accommodation around Dublin, and coordinated efforts – like the building of modular housing – are being made by the four local authorities across the Dublin region.

Despite cancelling a tender due to insufficient applications earlier this month and the issuing a separate one – DCC has said that preparatory works for further ‘rapid build’ housing schemes will begin next month in Drimnagh, Ballyfermot and Finglas with work beginning in Belcamp on the Malahide Road in July.
