The BBC went inside the sheds where your KFC chicken meal comes from

Here’s what viewers thought.

BBC / YouTube

THE BBC WENT behind the scenes at KFC last night, and even the footage of chickens-about-to-become-food didn’t turn off its legions of fast-food fans.

The series, Billion Dollar Chicken Shop, promised to go “from counter to boardroom” at the hugely popular fast-food chain.

That included a visit to a farm from where thousands of KFC chicken pieces are sourced.

KFC serves 23 million chickens to its customers every year.

One supplier to KFC, a farmer named Andrew, showed the cameras around the huge warehouse where the chickens are raised.

“I wouldn’t mind being a chicken in here,” he said, gesturing to the expanse of thousands of birds.

The animals live for just over a month before being slaughtered.

The three-part observational series looked at how the managing director of the UK and Ireland branches, Martin, is trying to expand his empire, while also showing teenager Beth’s long days in her new job at a KFC outlet.

Animal welfare

KFC says that it demands good animal welfare, and that its suppliers must meet or exceed Red Tractor standards.

But it has been criticised by Animal Aid, which told the Daily Mail that the birds “have no meaningful life” and that their lives are “oppressive”.

Does any of its chicken come from Ireland?
