AN IRISH-MADE children’s TV series has been nominated for an Emmy award.
Beat Girl has been shortlisted in the ‘Kids Series’ category of the International Emmy Kids Awards.
The producers originally sought funding from for the project from the Irish Film Board (IFB) but their proposal was rejected.
Rejection
Speaking on RTE’s Morning Ireland today, producer Triona Campbell said she didn’t hold anything against the IFB for turning them down, stating, “they don’t have an infinite pot of money and they can’t fund every project that comes in. We have the deepest respect for them – we parted as friends”.
She said the project was quite low budget but once they heard they had been nominated she said it was all worth it.
She said the had their “ups and downs” in terms of getting funding and getting the project off the ground, but said: “We felt there was a good heart and story in it.”
Tax relief
She said that the Section 481 tax relief allowed them to shoot the series in Ireland and use an Irish director.
She said she first heard about the nomination when she was putting her two children into the bath. “Someone rang me to ask if I had checked my emails,” she said. She added that it was a complete surprise. “We really hadn’t expected it. We were thrilled,” she said.
The first screening of the series was in Israel at Christmas and since then Campbell said they had signed a deal in the US and Scandinavia. In Ireland, the series is available on iTunes and Amazon is selling the DVD.
She said the nomination was a reflection of everyone who worked very hard on the project.
Triona Campbell, Nuno Bernardo and Director Mairtin de Barra will travel to New York for the awards ceremony in February.
