Fold up: 6 sofa beds that you’d be proud to have in your sitting room

Be guest-ready 24/7 – even if space is tight.

NO SPARE ROOM? No problem. Modern sofa beds are far from the cumbersome, clanky models we might remember from the ‘90s – which means they can be made up in a pinch if someone needs to stay over.

This week, we’ve scoured Irish stores for some contemporary sofa bed designs that are as good for sleeping as they are for sitting.

The prim and proper: Whether you go for fabric or leather, Chesterfield-style sofas will never go out of fashion and ones that double in function give them a modern, space-saving update.

Bearing in mind that buying a new couch can take some consideration, it bodes well to go for a colour that you won’t tire of too quickly. The beauty of investing in a sofa that’s not in an attention seeking shade is that the more affordable items you place around it can change up the space without the financial commitment – similar to what @hall_farm_cottage has done here with mustard-toned furnishings. Find lookalike sofa bed styles in a variety of easy to work with colours at DFS.

The sleek and Scandi: Your minimalist tastes don’t have to take the back seat when it comes to choosing a new sofa bed, proves EZ Living Furniture with the Gatsby. In keeping with the popular Nordic style, it can be hard to believe that it collapses into a nicely-sized double bed. People will be none the wiser that your sitting room can be transformed into a handy guest room in an instant.

A grey couch is far from boring in this case. @theloungeco gives us a lesson in styling a simple sofa for spring by adding complementary lemon yellow shades in block and chevron patterns. Tying in some flowers and a rug will warm a space up quickly as well as affordably.

The cosy and casual: This Kota couch from Habitat is a three-seater sofa bed with a click-clack mechanism that lets the back flip down, making it easy to unfold for any impromptu guests. Ease and comfort are the order of the day here, so it would work well in a more casual setting like a den or kid’s room.

We love how@ashvilleinteriordesign brings the outdoors in through statement wallpaper, plenty of plants and patterned cushions. The exposed wood floors also add to the forestry theme, while the soft fabric of the sofa ensures things stay cosy and warm.

The designer piece: If you’re the type that has guests over regularly but space is an issue then you might just want to bite the bullet and really invest in a big-ticket sofa bed that you’ll love and have for years to come. This Madison sofa, available at Arnotts is on the higher end of the price scale, but may be well worth it if it’s in constant use.

@boconcept_manchester keeps things simple and lets the piece do the talking by adding darker shades that bring attention to the sofa’s folded headrest design and deep seats. This is a sofa that could work just as well as a single bed, when it’s unfolded too.

The cute corner: If you’re feeling brave, then choosing a coloured fabric will create a real statement. @vi.flydde.storstan goes for a rich teal teamed with clashing patterns and colours, and plenty of accessories, that really draw attention to this large corner sofa.

While all sofa beds have a double function, the Como from Furniture City has the added bonus of bedding storage. Corner sofas are ideal for when space is at a premium but also work wonders in open plan rooms where different areas need to be established.

The space-saver: Your box room can be the perfect guest room or den – all you need to consider is furniture pieces that don’t overload the space. This Dennis bed from Woo Design does just that, requiring no unfolding if someone decides to stay over last minute. Invest in some cosy bedding and rectangular cushions that can give the back support and you have the best of both worlds.

Here, designer of the Dennis bed, @madebywoood create a cute and contemporary kid’s space with bursts of colour and traditional toys. Plenty of natural light is also a godsend if space is tight, creating the illusion of more room to manoeuvre.
