7 of the best takeaway coffees in Dublin, according to people who really know coffee

Here’s where the city’s top baristas and cafe owners go for their caffeine fix on the move.

WHETHER YOU’RE BRACING yourself for a long day at work or were woken up earlier than you’d like, we all need a pick me up in the morning.

But with so many cafes popping up in Dublin, it can be hard to choose the right place to grab a coffee on the go.

To that end, we’ve asked some of the leading players in Dublin’s cafe scene where they get their takeaway caffeine fixes…

Brian Ó Caoimh, Meet Me in the Morning

Proper Order in Smithfield is a real gem and the guys there are super friendly. The owner Niall is an award-winning barista and runs a pretty tight setup: functional and service orientated. You’re never waiting too long to get your cup, and there’s always a joke or laugh to be had.

I order the Batch Brew, which is basically a big filter coffee served black. It’s more gentle on the stomach than espresso based coffee, but it’s highly caffeinated.

Jane Lunnon, Shoe Lane Coffee

My favourite is definitely Ebb & Flow in Clontarf. The coffee is always perfectly prepared and served by the friendliest baristas. I love going in for an oat milk flat white and a delicious toastie after a long walk on the strand.

Lema Murphy, Pot Bellied Pig

The reason I opened a café was because I love how they make you feel. Chatting to the barista and taking in the buzz of the place always makes for a great start to the morning.

I often fly into town for quick visits, so on my way to do errands I pop into Kaph on Drury Street. The baristas know what they’re doing, and they use 3fe beans. There’s a really lovely buzz and I leave with a smile on my face, ready to get stuff done.

Afterwards when I’m heading back to my car, I go to Industry [also on Drury Street]. Around 11am it has a lovely calmness to it, quiet and soft. I regularly go for a flat white – I’m a country girl and I still like a bit of milk.

Lema Murphy is the owner of Pot Bellied Pig on Rathmines Road, Dublin 6.

Zoe Ewing Evans, Two Pups Coffee

If we’re on the run we always swing by Vice Coffee on Middle Abbey Street. Tom [Stafford, owner of Vice] is great, always has interesting coffees in, and is up for a bit of a chat.

They do a great Vietnamese ice coffee and have a €2 takeaway special on Tuesdays before 1pm called Tight Arse Tuesday! Kev [Douglas, co-owner of Two Pups] is an espresso man but I’m a filter coffee or single shot latte type of girl.

Mealla Tarrant, Hatch Coffee

Reference Coffee, just beside Meet Me in the Morning on Pleasants Street, is my go-to takeaway for a couple of reasons.

The coffee these guys brew is always super tasty and consistent; they really get the best flavours out of whatever bean they’re using at the time. The baristas are genuinely passionate about their product. Plus, I always love to scoot into Reference to buy a sneaky doughnut with an extra coffee for my drive home!

Mealla Tarrant is the owner of Hatch Coffee on Glasthule Road, Dublin.

Marita Chillingworth, Laine, My Love

I love Happy Out on Bull Island for an oat milk flat white. They seem to take great care with everything. They make their own syrups for flavourings, they weigh out their shots and the milk is always so smooth and silky. The elements that the average person wouldn’t really see are the key to the perfect coffee.

Marita Chillingworth is the manager of Laine, My Love on Talbot Street, Dublin 1.
