A WHITE-TAILED sea eagle has tested positive for avian influenza (H5N1) in Co Kerry.
The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine confirmed the case in the rare bird near Tarbert.
The bird has been submitted to the veterinary laboratory in Limerick as part of the department’s wild bird avian influenza surveillance programme.
It is the same highly pathogenic strain already been detected last week in a peregrine falcon in Co Galway.
Wild birds in Co Donegal and Co Offaly have also been confirmed positive for H5N1 today, including both mute swans and whooper swans and wild geese.

Agriculture Minister Charlie McConalogue said: “It is very unfortunate that this case has been detected in such a rare bird
“It is important that we remain vigilant, and I would also urge that flock owners should also be watchful.
“We should do everything that we can to ensure that potentially-infected wild birds do not have contact with domestic flocks.”
Minister of State for Heritage at the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Malcolm Noonan added: “These confirmations of avian influenza are very concerning.
“There is the immediate issue of the direct impacts on birds generally, and also, of course, there may be issues arising that impact on birds of conservation concern, including those being re-introduced to the wild.
“I would ask members of the public not to handle any dead birds.”
The Health Protection Surveillance Centre has said that although the H5N1 subtype can cause serious disease in poultry and other birds, no human infections with this virus have been reported worldwide and therefore consider the risk to humans to be very low.

It’s good to see, but I wish more parents would encourage kids to complete their education, regardless of opportunities that might be present in the economy. We need to have at least an LC as a fall back position for shifts in the economy.
Obviously, the unemployment from the boom is as unprecedented as the bubble itself was, but we wouldn’t have such difficulty with skills conversion if there was a higher general level of education.
That’s why cuts to education, grants etc while setting up schemes to allow employers get free interns is so risable. You have to play the long game, and training people with relevant skills is far more important than giving corporate dole to massage the headline unemployment figures.
Yeah its crazy how some people and their parents don’t see that value in education. I never saw not finishing school as an option, but I remember that around the time of my junior cert there was guy bragging about leaving school after it!
Ruairi Quinn is quietly taking credit for this too, the man is deluded. The young people see the writing on the wall, finish school to get the hell out of here. He sees this as a success, maybe statistically but not so in reality, truth is we are losing our hope for the future right there.
Of course they are staying in school, what else is there for them to do! I’d say a lot of people now are wishing they could go back, sit the leaving again sure. It would be better than sitting on your arse penniless, frustrated and bored.
And with these good figures the government want to cut back even further!? Bunch of morons. Makes me so angry. Especially when they can throw away a million euro on some stupid pointless river boat!!! :-o
