A 14-YEAR-OLD girl has died in a crash involving a minibus carrying pupils going on a school trip in Castle Vale, northeast of Birmingham.
The minibus crashed into a bin lorry on the A38 Kingsbury Road and emergency services were called to the scene around 9am today.
West Midlands Police said the girl was pronounced dead at the scene.
Three teachers and 20 other pupils were also on board the bus.
West Midlands Ambulance Service attended the scene and one girl was taken to hospital for superficial injuries, while several others were treated at the scene for minor injuries.
The lorry driver avoided injuries.
Superintendent Dean Hatton, head of the Central Motorway Police Group, said:
“The family of the teenage girl has been informed and they are being supported by officers from our family liaison unit.
“We are also in contact with the school and our colleagues at Staffordshire Police, who are understandably devastated as this occurred while their students were on a school trip.”
The pupils were from the John Taylor High School in Barton-under-Needwood, Staffordshire.
In a statement released on its website, the school said:
“A number of our Year 9 and Year 12 students that are on an art trip have been involved in a serious road traffic accident this morning.
“We are working to support those directly involved.”
Local MP Michael Fabricant tweeted he was “heartbroken” over the death of the girl.
