BlackBerry users hit by second day of international outages

Problems with the smartphone now appear to have spread to four continents, despite earlier claims that they had been fixed.

MILLIONS OF BLACKBERRY users across four continents have been hit by service outages in a second day of serious problems for the smartphone’s manufacturer.

Problems with messaging and internet browsing which hit BlackBerry owners in Europe, the Middle East and Africa yesterday appeared to have spread further afield today. The company said users in India, Brazil, Chile and Argentina were now also suffering outages.

Early this morning, BlackBerry’s manufacturer Research in Motion said that yesterday’s problems – which reportedly began at a data centre in Slough, near London – had been fixed and “services are operating normally”.

However, in a follow-up statement this afternoon the firm said:

Some users in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, India, Brazil, Chile, and Argentina are experiencing messaging and browsing delays. We are working to restore normal service as quickly as possible. We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused.

Irish users were among those affected by yesterday’s network problems. Owners of the smartphones have again taken to Twitter today to express their discontent:
