Boat of activists leaves Cyprus for Gaza

Nine activists attempt to deliver toys and medicine to Gaza, saying they will not resist any Israeli attempts to board the boat.

A BRITISH-FLAGGED boat left Famagusta in Cyprus today carrying nine activists from Israel, Germany, the USA and Britain in another attempt to deliver aid to the people of Gaza.

The boat, Irene, is hoping to get through the Israeli blockade and deliver its cargo of children’s toys and medical equipment nearly four months after Israel intercepted another flotilla bound for Gaza.

Richard Kuper, a passenger who is a member of the group ‘Jews for the Justice of Palestinians ‘ says that the passengers of the Irene will not resist if Israel attempts to board the boat.

“[Passengers will not] engage in any physical confrontation and will therefore not present Israelis with any reason or excuse to use physical force,” Kuper said.

Also on board is a survivor of the Nazi Holocaust, Reuven Moskovitz, who said she felt duty-bound to attempt to breach the blockade. “It is a sacred duty for me, as a (Holocaust) survivor, to protest against the persecution, the oppression and the imprisonment of so many people in Gaza, including more than 800,000 children,” Moskovitz said.

The report on the Israeli raid on the Mavi Marmara in May is currently being investigated by the United Nations after Israel accused the original report of bias.
