Bomb discovered at home in Co Meath

The army was called out after the viable device was found near a vehicle at the house in Ashbourne.

AN IMPROVISED EXPLOSIVE device was discovered at a home in Ashbourne, Co Meath in the early hours of this morning.

The bomb – which was found near a vehicle at the residence near the Dublin Road – had to be made safe by an army bomb disposal team after the gardaí cordoned off the area.

Experts from the Defence Forces arrived at the scene at 12.45am to deal with the device. No controlled explosion was carried out, and the scene was declared safe at 2.20am.

The device, which was confirmed as viable, was then removed to a military location for forensic examination. Its components have now been handed to the gardaí.

This was the 17th call-out of a bomb disposal team since the new year, and the sixth involving a viable IED.
