Homes evacuated after viable bomb found on Kildare residential street

The Army bomb disposal team made the device safe at the scene.

THE ARMY BOMB disposal team were called to a Co Kildare residential street today after a viable bomb was found on Church Street in Athy.

A Gardaí spokesperson told TheJournal.ie that the suspect device was called in by a member of the public shortly before midday.

A number of houses were subsequently evacuated to ensure the safety of residents and a cordon was established in the surrounding area.

The bomb disposal team arrived at 12.45pm and made the device safe.

After the scene was declared safe at 1.45pm, the device was then removed to a secure military location for further examination.

A Defence Forces statement said that evidence will be handed over to Gardaí to assist them with their investigation.
