Viable explosive device made safe in Cork city

The device was found by construction workers at Hill Grove Lane in the north of the city this afternoon.

A VIABLE EXPLOSIVE device has been made safe in Cork city this afternoon.

The device was found by construction workers at a house on Hill Grove Lane, just off the Watercourse Road, in the north of the city just before 3pm.

Gardaí summoned an Defence Forces’ Explosives Ordnance Disposal team to the scene, while nearby houses were evacuated and a cordon was put in place.

The device was made safe in situ, without the need for a controlled explosion, and was removed for further examination.

The scene was declared safe at about 4pm, and components of the device are to be handed over to the Gardaí for further investigation.
