Poll: Would 'booze curtains' make a difference to Irish people's alcohol habits?

The idea of separating alcohol from general produce in supermarkets has been the subject of frenzied debate in the Seanad over the last day.

THE LAST DAY has seen frenzied debate in the Seanad as to the proposed introduction of segregated alcohol spaces in Ireland’s retail shopping outlets.

The idea is relatively simple – under the new Alcohol Act which is currently being debated retailers will be required to make the alcohol they sell ‘invisible’ for customers.

The Department of Health has suggested this can be achieved through the application of ‘beer caves’ (separate refrigerated areas) or ‘booze curtains’ – plastic strip curtains for example to isolate alcohol areas from the rest of a store.

The idea has created a storm in the Dáil with our politicians reportedly coming under intense pressure from retailers not to let it happen

But would it make any difference?

We’re asking: Would the introduction of ‘booze curtains’ have any effect on Ireland’s drinking habits?

Poll Results:

No, not a chance (8762)
