Boy (11) charged for throwing petrol bombs and causing explosion in south Belfast last month

POLICE IN NORTHERN Ireland have charged an 11-year-old boy in connection with disorder in Belfast last month.

On 15 July, up to 50 people were involved in clashes with the PSNI officers in the Broadway area of south Belfast, with petrol and paint bombs being thrown at police and civilian vehicles.

No injuries to civilians or police were reported, but damage was done to a number of vehicles.

Police said the boy has been charged with riot, three counts of possessing petrol bombs in suspicious circumstances, and possessing an offensive weapon in a public place.

He has been further charged with throwing petrol bombs and causing an explosion likely to endanger life or cause serious injury to property.

The boy will appear before Belfast Youth Court on Friday, 6 September.

“As is usual procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service,” the PSNI said.

On Saturday, a 14-year-old boy was arrested in relation to disorder in Belfast in July.

He has since been charged with the offences of ‘riot’ and ‘possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.’

He is due to appear at Belfast Youth Court on 6 September.
