Nobody was injured during the dramatic incident.

HUNDREDS OF BEACHGOERS in Rio de Janeiro witnessed a dramatic rescue attempt on Saturday, which resulted in a helicopter crashing into the sea.

A swimmer had got into difficulty in the water at Copacabana beach and the helicopter was deployed to assist in the rescue.

However, it flew dangerously low and was pulled into the water. Officials told the BBC that there was a mechanical failure.

The crew was able to escape the helicopter and they were helped by a number of people who swam out to give assistance. The original swimmer was rescued by a surfer.
