The bridge was on the route of the cycling World Championships due to be held in Yorkshire on 29 September.

The route for the race is expected to be changed as it is unlikely the bridge will be repaired in time.

In a statement to the Guardian, Yorkshire 2019 chief executive Andy Hindley said: “At the current time, our thoughts are with those affected by the flooding. We will address any damage to race routes with North Yorkshire county council in due course.”
