Poll: Should the government replace the TV licence?

The new communications minister has no intention of bringing in a new charge.

REMEMBER THE LAST government’s plan for a broadcast charge to replace the existing TV licence?

Former communications minister Pat Rabbitte made a clear commitment to bring in the €160 charge – which was intended to cover people who watch TV content on laptops, tablets and smartphones.

Denis Naughten, the new communications minister, confirmed in the Dáil this week that he had “no plans to replace the current television licence fee with an alternative funding mechanism” – adding that he would be looking at ways to crack down on evasion.

This morning we’re asking: Do you think the licence should be replaced with a new charge?
