POLICE IN THE American state of Ohio have said that one person was killed, and 14 injured, after gunfire erupted at a nightclub in the city of Cincinnati last night.
WLWT News reports that the shootings took place just after 1am local time at Cameo Night Club.
Police in Cincinnati had said there were “at least a couple of shooters” who opened fire inside the nightclub, but assistant Cincinnati police chief Paul Neudigate said in a tweet later that there was “only one reported shooter at this time, still investigating if others involved.”
Cameos Update: Only one reported shooter at this time, still investigating if others involved.
“We are in the middle of a very horrific situation that occurred at the nightclub with multiple victims,” Neudigate said. “It’s going to be a long night for our homicide units to investigate.”
He added that there were hundreds of people in the club when the shooting broke out.

Police Sergeant Eric Franz told ABC News that no one is in custody in relation to the attack, adding that “we’ve got a really large scene at multiple hospitals”.
Captain Kim Williams says authorities are not sure what prompted the shooting at the Cameo nightclub early Sunday, but said that there is no indication that the shooting was terrorism-related.

And they waited with baited breath to find out if the shooter was white or brown, christian or muslim, so that the games could begin…. Oh please let it be the one that suits my side of the argument…
@Louis Jacob: And the irony is that your post is the first one to steer the conversation towards the ethnicity or religion of the perpetrators….way to go Louis :)
@Louis Jacob: This should not come as a surprise to you but I could give a damn about your opinion but as long as you can leap to call someone a racist etc, your little life will be complete.
@Louis Jacob: yep turns out it just your run of the mill crazy American(s) with guns they shouldn’t have. Can’t imagine the scene the police came across. I hope they find the shooter(s) quickly.
@Jho Harris: I didn’t call anyone racist. I also wasn’t giving my point of view. I was making an objective and slightly sarcastic comment on the nature of the discussion here. You on the other hand were quite objectionable in your use of a petty cliche (bleeding heart)… and you’re reference to my little life. I can only suspect that my reference to how seriously you take yourself touched a nerve.
@Peter King: there was a programme called ‘American justice’ on BBC2 recently and it was set in Jacksonville, Florida. In a period of 12 days there was 19 murders. This was deemed a normal statistic. America sounds very safe.
@Peter King: how many people are shot in Ireland every year. This includes the drug gang hits etc. Answer roughly 30 people, agreed 30 to many.
How many are shot in the states. Roughly 12000.
The US has less than 100 times the irish population and if it is safe as you say it should have only 3000 murders.
Conclusion 4 times more dangerous the ireland, I’m including all the gang hits in that.
On average 93 people are killed by guns in the US every day ( 7 of which are children) and an average of 200 injured by guns every day, if you think this is safe, you fool, plain and simple
@Peter King: 4.5 people murdered per 100000. That is 45 per million. Multiply by 350 that is 15750. It’s safe by American standards. Congrats for a safe environment.
If ireland had even half that level of crime a state of emergency would be declared.,
@Gerry Fallon: What Peter’s saying is that violent crime, as a whole, is down. It’s up in some cities but overall, it’s down. These aren’t biased facts or ‘alternative facts’, they’re from the FBI
@Daniel Curtin: you do relise that’s a very small number when you consider there is up on 320 million of a population
Theres not even 5 million in this country break the stats down into percentages and it tells a different story,
@Tony Daly: And if this turns out to be another example of gang violence using illegal firearms, will you retract your statement? A large group of shooters sounds an awful lot like rival gangs shooting one another up to me.
@Jason Culligan: gang members love guns, many Americans love guns, most American politicians love guns, guns are a fundamental and valued part of American culture.
Where guns are ubiquitous a use will be found for guns. They exert a powerful influence over the imagination and lives of American people.
Where the world is full of hammers everything will present as a nail.
Guns are being used as a method of conflict resolution. Removing your opponent by means of shorting them removes the opponent in the argument.
An interesting feature of the psychology of gun loves is that they tend to be dogmatic. It is as if I have guns makes me right.
@Tony Daly: Tom, it’s not as simple as that. Canada has very liberal gun laws with more gun ownership per capita than the US, but far fewer murders. Guns are illegal in Mexico and gun murders aren’t exactly rare there. Yes of course leaving every nutter own a gun leads to big problems, but you have to examine the culture that leads to these murders.
@Groovus Maximus: I agree that is is not merely the ubiquity of guns which is a problem but also the pervasiveness of gun culture. Gun culture creates a social context in which guns are perceived as an acceptable means of resolving disputes and sorting out opponents.
@Groovus Maximus: You should check your facts. Canada does NOT have more guns per capita than the US. In fact the US has approx four times as many per capita as Canada. Alternative facts!
@Maurice Bourke: They have a far better social welfare system and safety net for those that are less well off. Americans are very greedy by nature which leads to all this. America is a Right Wing Capitalist country. The less well off cant get jobs because of their ethnicity (African American, Latino, Boys in the Hood etc). They in turn receive a police record for life. Their only option is crime, drugs, GUNS (illegal) to make a living.
In a nutshell O’Bama tried to improve the situation a little (not much) with O’Bama Care due to the Republican majority in the Senate/Congress. It is the Republican party (Right Wing Gun Loving Capitalist) fault for this mess.
America is just not a safe place at all.
It’s full of angry gun toting nuts ready to pull the trigger even over a small “misdemeanor “as the yanks would call it.
It’s no longer the land of the free.
They have so many problems.
I always wanted to visit the states but not any more. They really need to get their act together but having this muldoon for a President is doing their image an awful lot of harm.
I really do feel sorry for the decent people of America.
@Gerry Fallon:
‘I always wanted to visit the states but not any more’
Very limiting travel options if all countries with legal gun ownership laws are off the agenda.
The US is an amazing country, well worth a visit, incredible geography and history.
@Gerry Fallon: it is possible to visit the US safely but it is important to be aware of the gun culture which thrives in some US States. In those States, it is important to avoid any disagreement or provocation from other people just in case they are armed and dangerous.
Gun violence against visitors is less prevalent than gun violence against the local population.
The reality is that gun violence tends to be domestic (including children) neighbourhood and social as well as gang related.
Visitors tend to be outside of the usual circles of gun violence. It is the permanent inhabitants who tend to be more exposed to the risk of the oppression of gun culture.
@Gerry Fallon: Gerry if you want to see New York then go for it .. if something is going to happen to you it will .. whether it’s here or over there . Life is too short .. enjoy it ..
@Tommy:
Haha Americans are nothing but gun toting terrorists who are paranoid as hell about guns being taken away from them.if government really wanted to they could.
.. Sounds as though the police/army would have to conduct a house by house search if they ever did want to skip an amnesty and go straight to confiscation. Even then all the survivalists would have their caches. Could be done, would be gory.
@thejynxeffect: there is a multiplicity of sources for that statistic of an average of 8 child deaths per day. Giggle it, if interested.
There are other causes of child mortality but most of them are a consequent of ordinary life events.
The point is that guns are unnecessary and perform no vital, function except perhaps in the area of law enforcement by law enforcement authorities trained in the use of guns.
@thejynxeffect: Whether or not Tony cares about car accidents or bathroom accidents has no bearing on the validity of his comments or opinions on gunshot accidents.
You’re coming across as very childish and immature. Would you care to explain what your intention is in asking if he cares about those things?
There were 16 people shot and at least 10 transported to the hospital. One person died. There were police on duty outside the popular night club. It’s possible there was more than one shooter.
If you have a culture where nightly, stories and images of graphic violence are distributed via television to most homes, couple that with music genres that popularize “gangster” lifestyles, mix in more than 300 million guns and then add methamphetamine and alcohol, we have a real Hunter S. Thompson reality.
I was going to say “I’m surprised this doesn’t happen every week…”, but then I realized it does happen every week in some form or another.
Be glad, Ireland, that your violent crime rate is so low. In some parts of the US, life can be rather hellish.
