A HEATWAVE IN the Quebec province has killed at least 19 people in the past week as high summer temperatures scorched eastern Canada, health officials have said.
12 of the dead were reported in the eastern province’s capital Montreal, said regional public health director Mylene Drouin.
The Tribune newspaper said five of the deaths occurred in the past 48 hours in the Eastern Townships, a rural area just east of the city.
And late yesterday, two more deaths blamed on the heat were recorded in a Montreal suburb, Radio Canada reported.
“My thoughts are with the loved ones of those who have died in Quebec during this heat wave,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Twitter.
“The record temperatures are expected to continue in central and eastern Canada, so make sure you know how to protect yourself and your family,” Trudeau said.
Drouin said the victims were part of “the very vulnerable population, the elderly or people suffering from chronic or mental illnesses”.
Temperatures soared to 34 degrees Celsius with a humidity that made it feel closer to 40 degrees, the meteorological service said.
The mercury has regularly topped 30 degrees since Friday in southern Quebec, accompanied by stifling humidity levels.
A government heat warning is in place for the region, but meteorologists are forecasting a drop in temperatures at the end of the week.
No deaths had been reported for the same period in the neighbouring province of Ontario, which has also sizzled under extremely high temperatures.
In 2010, a heat wave killed around 100 people in the Montreal area.

DOGE is set to be officially dissolved on the 4th of July 2026 after publishing its final report on the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence anyway, so Musk was never going to be a long-term member of Trump’s cabinet in the first place. His role was to come in and cut as much waste, fraud and abuse as possible. So far he’s trimmed the budget by at least $55 billion, which is no mean feat. However, there’s no other real justification for Musk staying in the cabinet after he was sent in to do what he’s doing now. Musk has five companies that he’s running right now. That requires a lot of juggling and he still has millions of shareholders to answer to. It makes sense on his part to step away once DOGE has completed its mission to get back to his companies.

Yes, you’ve hit the nail on the head when it comes to how money works. Fiat currency has nothing backing it, meaning the value solely relies on trust. Unlike gold, which has intrinsic value due to its scarcity and physical properties and is what the dollar used to be pegged to, fiat money only works because people agree that, for example, a $20 note is worth $20. Trump doesn’t understand tariffs and thinks that other countries pay for them instead of being a tax on American consumers.
