Gardaí responding to house fire uncover cannabis worth €500,000

Officers were called to a house in Kildare yesterday – and made an unexpected discovery.

GARDAÍ HAVE SEIZED cannabis with an estimated street value of €500,000, along with €20,000 worth of cocaine after being called to a house fire in Kildare yesterday morning.

A “sophisticated grow house” which contained approximately 826 cannabis plants at different stages of growth was found in the house by gardaí from the Naas District.

Officers were alerted to the fire at a house in Old Kilcullen, about 10km south of Newbridge, at approximately 9am yesterday.

No arrests have been made, according to gardaí .

A statement from the Garda Press Office said:

“Drug seizures play a critical role in targeting the livelihood of criminals and reducing their ability to carry out illegal activities.”

Drug seizures also help protect communities from the devastating impact of drugs and the associated criminality.

Earlier this week, gardaí and the Revenue Customs Service seized €600,000 worth of cannabis during a search in north County Dublin.

A vehicle was stopped and searched by members of the Organised Crime Bureau. Cannabis herb was found concealed in the vehicle.

A 34-year-old man was arrested.

Investigations in relation to both seizures are still ongoing.
