Driver arrested after teenage girl dies in single-vehicle crash in Co Wicklow

The incident happened shortly before 5am at Slaney Park in Baltinglass.

A TEENAGE GIRL has died in a single-vehicle crash in Co Wicklow.

The incident happened shortly before 5am at Slaney Park in Baltinglass. 

The girl, who was a passenger in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene. No other serious injuries to persons was reported.

The driver of the car, a male in his teens, has been arrested on suspicion of offences under the Road Traffic Act.

He is being detained at a Garda station in Wicklow under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

The road at Slaney Park is currently closed and local diversions are in place while Forensic Collision Investigators conduct an examination of the scene.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to the collision to come forward.

Any road users who may have camera footage, including dash-cam footage, and were travelling in the Slaney Park area between 4.30am and 5am are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.

Cork

Separately, a man in his 80s has been seriously injured in a collision between a tractor and a car that happened yesterday evening on the N71 near Bantry, Co Cork. 

The man was driving the car involved, he has been taken to Cork University Hospital for treatment. No other injuries have been reported. 

The collision took place at Durrus Cross in Gortnacloona at roughly 8.05 pm last night.

Forensic Investigators conducted an examination of the scene this morning.

The N71 is closed at Durrus Cross, as is the R591 approaching the junction. Local diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to the collision to come forward.

“Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the Durrus Cross area between 7:45pm and 8:15pm on Saturday 4th May 2024 are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Bantry Garda station on 027 20860, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station,” a spokesperson said.
