Car sales are up almost 20% and these are the most popular makes of 2016

The strongest sales were in Roscommon (30%), while the lowest were in Leitrim (11%).

NEW CAR SALES are at 143,190 for first three quarters of 2016, 18.4% higher than last year.

Figures from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) Quarterly Motor Industry Review for 2016 also reveal that the strongest sales were in Roscommon (30%), while the lowest were in Leitrim (11%).

Some 6,614 new vehicles were licensed in October, compared with 6,160 during the same month in 2015 – an increase of 7.4%.

Overall, the top selling makes for 2016 are Hyundai, Volkswagen and Toyota. Here’s a list of the top 10:

Figures from the CSO showed that in the first ten months of 2016, seven out of every ten new private cars licensed were diesel, while 96.2% of new private cars licensed in the same period were in the A/B CO2 emissions bands.
