Should cars be allowed to have dashboard touchscreens?

Newer car models have dashboard touchscreens, which can take driver focus off the road.

TOUCHSCREEN CONTROLS IN modern cars are a road safety risk, a representative of car safety watchdog Euro NCAP told an event in Dublin yesterday.

Newer car models use touchscreens for functions like adjusting radio volume, air conditioning, or fog lights, but can also feature entertainment options like podcast and music streaming apps – all of which can take drivers’ eyes off the road.

Ilse Harms of Euro NCAP said traditional buttons are more intuitive and easy to understand and use, whereas with touchscreens drivers must look at the screen, and therefore away from the roadway.

So today we’re asking: Should cars be allowed to have dashboard touchscreens?
