Sky News / YouTube

THE DRIVER OF a car along the coast of Chile had a lucky escape after a massive wave toppled over his car.

Sky News reports waves reached up to five metres in height as a raging storm battered the Pacific coast.

The storm has also caused flooding in some parts of the country. Local media reported the peak was just before midnight on Sunday.

The severe weather is said to be connected to “the intensity of the El Niño phenomenon which has generated a condition of atmospheric instability in the North Pacific Ocean between Japan and Alaska”.

Some areas have been closed off to vehicles and pedestrians until the weather passes.
