Gardaí freeze over €500k worth of cryptocurrency in investigation into Galway gang

Cash, three cars and number of high value goods were also seized, including 12 designer watches and multiple electronic devices.

GARDAÍ HAVE FROZEN over €500,000 worth of cryptocurrency and seized cash, cars and luxury goods as part of an operation targeting organised crime in Co Galway. 

Searches at a number of premises in Tuam and Moycullen were carried out on Monday by gardaí attached to Galway Divisional Crime, Galway Drugs Unit, Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation, the Armed Support Unit and the Garda Dog Unit.

During the searches, gardaí seized €75,000 in cash as well as three cars, a Tiguan jeep, an Audi A5 and a Ford Transit van.

A number of high value goods were also seized, including 12 designer watches and multiple electronic devices.

Two bank accounts, both within and outside Ireland, with cash and cryptocurrency valued in excess of €990,000 were frozen under money laundering legislation.

One of these accounts held €530,000 worth of crypto currency and the second held €465,000 cash.

A garda spokesperson said that no arrests have been made at this time, and the operation focused on disrupting and dismantling organised criminal groups in Galway remains ongoing.
