Gardaí attempt to identify body found in car crash blaze

The incident occurred shortly before 1.30am last night.

GARDAÍ ARE ATTEMPTING to identify the victim of a single-vehicle collision last night in Mayo.

Emergency services arriving at the scene found the car engulfed in flames. Gardaí say that is it not yet known whether the deceased is a man or a woman.

The scene has now been sealed off while forensic investigators carry out an examination.

The crash occurred shortly before 1.30am last night at Cortoon, Newport.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who was travelling in the area of who may have any information about the incident to contact then at Westport Garda Station on 098 50230, the Garda Confidential Line 1-800-666-111 or any garda station.

It is the third road death since yesterday evening.

A 27-year-old man died after he was hit by a truck on the Ennis Road in Limerick city early this morning, and a 22-month-old boy was struck by a van at his home in Donegal.
