Case closed: Woman claims cash in curtains donated to Barnardos

A sum of cash was discovered inside curtains donated to the children’s charity and a public appeal was issued yesterday.

THE CURIOUS CASE of the cash in the curtains that were donated to a branch of the children’s charity Barnardos has been solved.

The lady who donated the curtains to the shop on the Lower Rathmines Road in Dublin last Wednesday returned today and was instantly recognised by staff.

They were able to satisfy themselves that she was the rightful owner of the cash after she described the curtains’ pattern.

Colette Miller, manager of Barnardos’ seven shops, said: “The lady told us that she learned of our appeal when watching TV and quickly realised what had happened.

“We have been overwhelmed with the media response and public interest and would like to thank everyone who helped us to spread the word and help reunite this lady with the money.

“She has asked us to protect her anonymity and we are respecting her wishes.”

The money had been discovered by a volunteer when they were sorting through items that had been donated. The money was discovered tucked into a bag that was pinned inside the lining of the curtains.

Barnardos says that donations can be made in any of their shops located in Cork, Wexford, Carlow, Dun Laoghaire, Clondalkin, Kilbarrack and Rathmines.

It accepts brand new and quality second hand clothing for men, women and children, shoes, handbags and accessories, soft furnishings, household items, books, CDs and DVDS.
