'I'm sorry': Casey Affleck opens up in the wake of #MeToo

Affleck’s name became associated with a long list of men who have abused power in Hollywood.

CASEY AFFLECK HAS apologised for his behaviour on set of a film which resulted in two women suing him.

Affleck (42) said he is taking responsibility for the “unprofessional” atmosphere on the set of 2010′s I’m Still Here that led to civil lawsuits from two women who worked on the film.

He also spoke to The Associated Press about what he’s learned from the #MeToo conversation and what he’s doing at his production company to bring new voices into Hollywood.

During Affleck’s best actor campaign for Manchester By the Sea in 2016, the spotlight was turned back on the civil lawsuits filed by a cinematographer and a producer who worked on I’m Still Here for breach of contract.

One of the women also sued for sexual harassment, and both described an uncomfortable atmosphere on the set of the unconventional mockumentary.

“It was an unprofessional environment … the buck had to stop with me being one of the producers and I have to accept responsibility for that,” Affleck told the AP of the making of I’m Still Here, which he produced and directed.

“I contributed to that unprofessional environment and I tolerated that kind of behaviour from other people and I wish that I hadn’t.”

I behaved in a way and allowed others to behave in a way that was really unprofessional. And I’m sorry.

Although the lawsuits were settled out of court, Affleck’s name in 2016 and 2017 became associated with a long list of men who have abused power in Hollywood.

While Affleck has addressed the lawsuits, including in an AP interview from July 2017 , he also has not spoken publicly since #MeToo and Time’s Up overtook the culture ten months ago.

In that time, Affleck also opted out of presenting the best actress award at the Oscars — traditionally the responsibility of the previous year’s best actor winner. Instead, Jodie Foster and Jennifer Lawrence handed the trophy to Frances McDormand.

“I think it was the right thing to do just given everything that was going on in our culture at the moment,” Affleck said. “And having two incredible women go present the best actress award felt like the right thing.”

Affleck said he’s been learning a lot in the past few years listening to the conversation and has moved away from a place of defensiveness to one of finding his own culpability.

“I think bigger picture, in this business women have been underrepresented and underpaid and objectified and diminished and humiliated and belittled in a bazillion ways and just generally had a mountain of grief thrown at them forever. And no one was really making too much of a fuss about it, myself included, until a few women with the kind of courage and wisdom to stand up and say, ‘You know what? Enough is enough,’” Affleck said.

Those are the people who are kind of leading this conversation and should be leading the conversation. And I know just enough to know that in general I need to keep my mouth shut and listen and try to figure out what’s going on and be a supporter and a follower in the little, teeny tiny ways that I can.

Of his decision to do an interview now, Affleck said, “If I’m not promoting a movie, I’m not going to do any press, so that’s why you haven’t heard from me.”

He’s also taking these lessons both to work and home to his two sons, who are ages 14 and 10.

“I want to be in a world where grown men model compassion and decency and also contrition when it’s called for, and I certainly tell (my sons) to own their mistakes when they make them,” he said.

Should that be the Best Actor playing a Female Identified Role, given it is no longer PC to call women ‘actresses’

Actually have you just sexually harrassed me. Must check the NUIG Report on inappropriate sexual behaviour to see if you have breached acceptable behaviour.

@Kevin Sweeney: But Kevin , are you forgetting the trials we had on the set of Noel Walsh’s epic “The Wild Boar of San Fernando” ? Such gruelling shoot days , and you, especially, had trouble with the lines. I’ll admit Noel was perfectly capable of beastly behaviour, but cast your mind back to the elation at the first screening. Everything came together so well, and you , despite your shortcomings, were the eventual star.

Its “the biz” my good man , the show must go on.

Next time his produces a movie he should just hire an all male crew and then there is no chance of any hassle. Pretty soon that is the way that things will go. Have all male or all female crews, staff or board members. Why would you want to mix men and women together is there is going to be a chance of someone suffering a real or perceived slight or even just someone out to make a quick buck?

This #metoo lark is getting out of hand. Seems no man is safe from possible accusations from women about things that didn’t really cause much of a ripple at the time they actually happened. I’m thinking of all the times I was a young lad back in the early 90s that I’d chance dropping the hand a bit on a young wan while we were shifting during a slow set in The Hydro in Kilmuckridge. Any of the ones who weren’t exactly enthusiastic could probably have me up now for sexual assault. But it was the done thing at the time….

@Jumperoo: Well “dropping the hand” was as you said of it’s time and the first fumblings of youth. Hopefully you were not grabbing any female that passed by, so it followed from kissing and that you stopped when asked. The sexual assaults and rapes, the sexual blackmail and predatory male behaviour, cannot be condoned in any situation and threatens women. It also lessens men that know how to engage in conversation with women and can form adult relationships built on mutual respect and desire. It’s not that difficult a premise.

@WJH: it was a good spot all right. Am actually due to go to a wedding reception there soon. It’s now called the Upton Park Hotel, the night club is long gone, and any attempts now at dropping the hand or anything else will have to be confined to my own wife after we get home. Will still be interesting to return to the scene of many ‘crimes’……

@Jumperoo: just because something is “the done thing at the time” doesn’t make it right. Male celebrities sleeping with underaged girls comes to mind

The fact that you started your little rant with “no man is safe” goes to show your complete and utter ignorance as to the male privilege you have. The reality is no woman or girl is safe from possible objectification, sexual harassment or assault from any man who chooses to take advantage. Women and girls have to live their whole lives constantly checking themselves to ensure they’re safe. Really the issue is with a number of men who seem incapable of just being decent human beings

I think a big problem with this “abuse of power” narrative is that women are attracted to powerful men in a similar way that men are attracted to beautiful women.

Why is this comments section always so full of triggered misogynists who use feminism like it’s a dirty word, in order to attack women for daring to be people who have had bad experiences often at the hands of men. We’re not accusing you personally, so please do us the decency of not automatically dismissing everything women say based on this armour you put up every time a man does something to a woman. Say – that’s not me, be the person who doesn’t accept that behaviour and contribute to making the world a more tolerant and safe place. Women are not looking for supremecy as you seem to often imply, feminism is not a bad word – we just want to be equal and be seen to be of equal value. If you think that is the case already, it is not.

@Dave Slater: pretty much exactly what most of the misogynistic comments here do. If it seems ‘copy and paste’ it’s because a lot of people feel the same way. The term ‘triggered’ was used because, well, anytime there is a story here to do with anything relating to metoo or gender a flood of comments come out either ambushing women for no reason like we’re all just running around finger pointing like crazy harpees or using ‘what about’ examples to deflect from the fact that sexual assault is still a big issue. And yes, I suppose it did trigger me to a certain extent, it triggers emotions for me every time I see these comments. They feel belittling.

What exactly constitutes an “uncomfortable atmosphere” on the set of a movie? Werner Herzog, while directing Fitzcarraldo put a gun to Klaus Kinski’s head with the full intent of killing him if he walked away.
