Registration for census jobs closes after just four hours due to demand

By 1pm today the number had already reached 16,000.

WHEN WE SAID yesterday demand was expected to be ‘high’ for positions as a census enumerator, we may have been under-selling it.

It turns out an unprecedented number of people want to help the CSO distribute and collect this year’s census, though they may mainly be thinking of the €2,400 they’ll earn in that ten week period.

Applications were being accepted from 9am this morning. Yesterday the CSO had said it would take applications until this Friday – or until the number of applicants reached 15,000.

By 1pm today the number had already reached 16,000 and the CSO decided it had to close registration after just four hours. Those who had already started the process at that stage were allowed to finish their applications.

This year’s census takes place on Sunday 24 April and some 4,660 enumerators will be recruited to carry out the task.
