4 of a kind: Homes in the centre of towns across the country

From an old stone house in Westmeath to a cosy two-bed in Dublin 8.

CONVENIENCE, PUBLIC TRANSPORT and an instant sense of community, there are heaps of reasons why living in a town holds great appeal for house hunters across the country. From an old stone house in Westmeath to a cosy two-bed in Dublin 8, here are four houses on the market right now that have everything needed for everyday life on their doorstep.

Castlepollard, Co Westmeath – €355,000

Aptly-named Old Stone House, this is a four-bed home, that dates back to the early 1900s, saw an extension in 2004. Even though it’s located in the centre of Castlepollard, it has a big back garden. Inside comprises an open plan kitchen and dining room that leads to a spacious conservatory. There are also two living rooms on the ground floor.

Of the four double bedrooms, one lives on the ground floor and has its own shower room. The main bedroom upstairs has an en suite bathroom and a walk-in wardrobe. The remaining two bedrooms share the family bathroom. Castlepollard has great access to Dublin, which can be reached in under an hour while the large town of Mullingar is about 12 kilometres away.

Kinsale, Co Cork – €375,000

12 Barrack Street in the seaside town of Kinsale is a three-bed end of terraced home that spans 82 m². A charming, renovated cottage, it dates back to 1930. There is a lot of potential to this place if the next owners decide to extend. The garden to the back is south facing.

The rooms inside comprise a porch that leads to the sitting room and dining room, while the galley kitchen opens out to the garden. One bedroom and a bathroom also lives on the ground floor. A spiral staircase winds up to the two bedrooms above – one is a single and the other is a double. This is also a chance to leave the car at home, as everything is a walk away and there is a good connection to Cork city and surrounding areas.

Inside comprises a hallway that leads to the living room, a family room and an open plan kitchen and dining space. A utility room and downstairs toilet complete the ground floor.

The main bedroom upstairs has an en suite bathroom and has been extended. The remaining two bedrooms share the family bathroom. Cork Street, Dublin 8 – €395,000

36 Emerald Square, sits just off Cork Street, down a cul-de-sac, in the capital. A two-bed terraced home, this is sure to suit a small family or working couple who want to be in the middle of it all. The place saw a revamp in 2021, so the bathroom, bedroom and kitchen are all new. The heating system, plumbing, flooring and wiring have been updated, too.

The layout makes the most of the 55 m² it has to work with, comprising an open plan kitchen, living and dining space with plenty of storage space under the stairs. Two double bedrooms and a bathroom sit upstairs. There is also a yard that may be a bit of a sun trap to the back.
