Not to mention higher staff costs, rates and transport/shipping. Yes, wine is more expensive here but don’t blame the retailers. The government take by far the biggest share.

A bit harsh there Eoghan, it’s only a bit of a fun article, not an academic paper.

I really don’t get what the minimum pricing is supposed to achieve.
We are already one of the most expensive in Europe for alcohol. So what exactly is an extra increase supposed to do? Is the end goal supposed to be only wealthy people can afford to drink?
Surely problem drinkers will always drink – they will just spend more on alcohol.
People who aren’t problem drinkers but don’t have much money will drink less – but is this fair? Since people with lots of money will just carry on regardless.

Min pricing is simple more vat for goverment, more money for large drinks distributors who will have next to no competition.

Nice angle, focussing on a bottle of wine. Most of these type of lists are usually about beer.

I only drink red wine. I’ll attempt to visit some of these places – thanks!

It’s not a fixed percentage. Excise duty is €3.23 ex vat (23%) per 75cl bottle of still wine and €6.46 on sparkling above a certain pressure.
Therefor on cheaper wines the tax percentage is much higher than on more expensive wines.

Well that figures. Charge people who can’t afford the more expensive wines more through taxation.
