Poll: Should a school attendance payment replace child benefit?

A TD has claimed that replacing the payment would save up to €135 million a year.

REPLACING CHILD BENEFIT for school-age children with a school attendance payment would save the State between €100 million and €135 million a year, the TD Denis Naughten has claimed.

The independent deputy said that the school attendance payment would be the same amount – €130 – but would save millions in administration costs and would stop the benefit being paid for children who do not go to school in Ireland.

However, the Department of Social Protection has said that this proposal could face difficulties because the logistical and administrative challenges and European Commission rules on discriminating against migrant workers.

Today, we ask you: Should child benefit be replaced with a school attendance payment?

Poll Results:

No (3325)
