A CHILD HAS received “serious injuries” following an alleged dog attack in Co Wexford.
Gardaí and emergency services attended to the incident in Enniscorthy yesterday afternoon.
A garda spokesperson said a boy received serious injuries after being allegedly attacked by a dog.
The child was airlifted to Crumlin Hospital where he is undergoing treatment for serious injuries.
The dog – understood to be a pit bull cross – has since been put down and gardaí say enquiries are ongoing.
Barbara Bent, director of Wexford SPCA, told The Journal that serious incidents of that kind are rare in the county.
“We haven’t heard of that in a long time. What we’d come in touch with would be much like the little Jack Russell grabbing someone’s ankles, but someone being mauled by a dog as is alleged is not common thank god,” she said.
Local councillor Kathleen Codd- Nolan said she understood the incident was witnessed by a number of other children.
“It’s a dreadful shock for everyone. It would be awful to witness that and a little children would be very traumatised by it,” she said.
“I hope the little boy gets well, to be in hospital coming up to Christmas is really is hard on the family. We’ll be thinking and praying for them.”
