Chinese activist sentenced to 10 years in jail

This is the third time Liu Xanbin has been put in jail by Chinese authorities.

AN ACTIVIST FIGHTING for democracy in China has been jailed for ten years.

Liu Xanbin was sentenced for inciting subversion of state power after writing articles calling for democratic reforms in the country, the BBC reports.

This is his third time being sent to jail for his activist work, and his wife Chen Mingxian told the BBC that her husband shouted “I’m not guilty” while in the courtroom.

Liu Xanbin helped to found the Sichuan branch of the underground group China Democracy Party. He was sent to prison for two-and-a-half years in 1989 for taking part in protests and was sentenced to 13 years in jail in 1999 for the subversion of state power.

After his release in 2008 he continued with his activism work, and wrote articles that were critical about China’s political system.
