DUBLIN FIRE BRIGADE are warning people of the danger of chip pans after a fire in Crumlin.
A person was rescued by their neighbours after a fire broke out yesterday.

Dolphins Barn and Tallaght fire services were called to the incident.
DFB are reminding people of the dangers of chip pans by warning to “always keep an eye on them”.
Meanwhile, firefighters also issued a warning about cooking under the influence of drink, drugs or certain medications.

When I was 13 my dad was drunk and fell asleep with the chip pan on. I woke about 3am to smoke in my room. I got up and looked downstairs and saw the kitchen light on so guessed it was being looked after. I closed my door and went back to bed. About 5-10 minutes later dad ran upstairs and kicked me out of bed. Mom refused to get up because she wasn’t talking to dad because he was drunk.
It turned out my brothers woke dad up when they saw smoke in the living room. The kitchen has bad smoke damage but other than that it was contained fairly well.
Nobody WANTS oven chips… we settle for oven chips.. It’s like getting a bag of Walkers instead of Tayto in a pub…. you’d nearly question if you’d go back…
Oven chips aren’t really chips, though are they.? If you went to the chipper and got a bag of oven chips with your fresh cod, you wouldn’t be too impressed would you? I hate oven chips
There’s a difference between a chip pan and a deep fat fryer. DFF has a thermostat and is much less likely to go on fire (you still shouldn’t use it whilst drunk though).
They’re should be banned.. far too many incidents involving them . A coroner only recently asked for them to be taken off the shelves because of how dangerous they are .
I’m not exactly sure how’d that in practice… when your pished and in need of something greasy surely you’d just fill a large pot with oil and carry on as usual…
You can’t ban chip pans. They’re just pans that people fill with oil. You can encourage them to buy deep fat fryers instead, which have a thermostat so won’t burst into flames (unless they’re faulty).
Derek you’re absolutely right on Deep Fat Fryers and thermostats… which nearly makes them more dangerous as people expect them to do their job. I’d one go up on me a few years back in a flat and due to the size of the thing and the amount of oil it was a nightmare to get it outside safely… although the flat not having a fire blanket didn’t exactly help matters.
I threw out the deep fat fryer a couple of years ago (mainly because of health reasons) and bought an air fryer, much better all round and you only use a tablespoon of oil, sometimes if you use frozen chips no oil is needed at all.
I remember going down the country to my cousins for the summer holidays. They had a deep fat fryer and it was our sole method of cooking for two weeks. Even the corn flakes went in………
I bought a deep fat fryer but chips just didn’t taste the same so went back to the old chip pan. The problem is not the chip pan it’s people drinking to much.
