4 events foodies should check out this Christmas

Love food? In Ireland over Christmas? Look no further.

Hazel Mountain Chocolate Hazel Mountain Chocolate

‘TIS THE SEASON to loosen the belt and feast on turkey, fancy crackers and way too many Roses.

With that in mind, here are four events for foodies taking place around Ireland over the next few days.

Chocolate Lock-In, Hazel Mountain Chocolate

When: December 30th

Where: Hazel Mountain Chocolate, 9 Middle Street, Galway

Irish people typically associate the term “lock-in” with staying in the local until all hours. Now Hazel Mountain Chocolate is hosting a lock-in with a difference.

The Galway-based chocolate factory’s Chocolate Lock In invites customers to have a behind-the-scenes tour of the shop and sample delectable treats like chocolate canapés and hot chocolate cocktails, as well as a host of their signature chocolates.

Oh, and did we mention you get cacao champagne on arrival? Very fancy altogether.

The tour costs €10 and organisers say it’s been a roaring success so far. “Feedback has been great with every date having been booked up,” says John Connolly of Hazel Mountain Chocolate. “It’s great value and people have a fun and educational time learning about chocolate.” If you can’t make the December tour, they will be starting again in February.

Natural Wine and Tacos

When: December 20th – 23rd, 6pm – 11pm

Where: Meet Me in the Morning, Pleasant Street, Dublin 8

Since it opened in 2016, Meet Me in the Morning has established itself as one of the city’s most interesting, innovative cafés. Ahead of Christmas, they are hosting four nights of natural wine and tacos. What’s natural wine, you ask? It’s wine made without chemicals and added sulphites, and with minimal technological intervention.

Vegetables will be sourced from McNally Family Farm, while meat from Gubbeen Farm and Broughgammon Farm will also make an appearance on the menu. All the wines are from Le Caveau.

Be advised that spaces are going quickly, but there are still plenty of spots left for the 22nd and 23rd. You can make a reservation over DM and there will be a limited number of spaces for walk-ins as well.

Bao Boi, Cork

When: Open now

Where: 128 Barrack Street, Cork

Rejoice! The humble bao has made its way to the People’s Republic. A bao is a type of steamed bun that’s popular in Asian cuisine. It’s delicate, sweet and extremely versatile. Bao Boi, the brainchild of chef Bryan McCarthy, opened in Cork just this month.

The menu features both sweet and savoury buns, including the delightfully named Bao Chicka Bao Wow. If you’re in Cork over the Christmas season, it’s one to check out.

Twixmas, Bow Lane

When: December 27th – 30th

Where: Bow Lane, Aungier Street, Dublin 2

If you’re suffering from cabin fever over Christmas, Bow Lane is hosting a series of boozy brunches called Twixmas. Customers can enjoy their brunch with bottomless cocktails for just €18 extra. (You can enjoy bottomless champagne for €25 if you’re feeling fancy.)

The cocktails on offer include Bloody Marys, margaritas, espresso martinis and prosecco cocktails. Sure, it’d be rude not to.
