4 events for... Christmas movie lovers who want the full experience

From pyjamas and pillows to a restored Church.

WHETHER YOU’RE A fan of classic Christmas films or prefer the cheesy, heart-warming kind, the festive season isn’t complete without watching a movie to match.

And what’s better than getting the full festive film experience in a cinema or theatre? There’s fresh popcorn, plush seats, surround sound – and sometimes a few extras thrown in too.

Read on for four of the best events around the country for Christmas movie lovers who want the whole shebang.

1. Home Alone 2 at Leopardstown Racecourse

When: 16 December

Where: Leopardstown Racecourse, Foxrock, Dublin 18

Wear your pyjamas and bring a pillow to the drive-in cinema at Leopardstown Racecourse for the ultimate cosy cinema experience as you watch Kevin McAllister run riot in New York. You’ll want to be quick though, as several other movie screenings have sold out.

Book tickets here.

2. Christmas selection at The Stella Theatre

When: throughout December

Where: The Stella Theatre Rathmines, Dublin 6

Have a luxury-filled movie experience at the beautifully restored Stella Theatre Rathmines. With couches, plush leather chairs and even beds, this is certainly no ordinary cinema experience. You can also enjoy cocktails, nachos and popcorn – all of which will be served to you in your seat if you desire. There are multiple Christmas movies being screened in the run up to Christmas, including Love Actually, It’s A Wonderful Life and Elf.

3. Die Hard at Triskel Christchurch Cinema

When: 20-23 December

Where: Triskel Christchurch Cinema, South Main Street, Cork

Set in a restored 1700s Neo-classical Georgian Church, Triskel Christchurch Cinema is holding four screenings of Die Hard. Although it’s much debated whether the Bruce Willis film fits into the ‘Christmas movie’ category, we’re saying ‘yippie-ki-kay’ to that.

 Book tickets here.

4. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory at Kilkenny Castle

When: 15 December

Where: Kilkenny Castle, The Parade, Kilkenny

Okay, okay, this technically isn’t a Christmas movie per se. It is, however, a classic movie that can be appreciated at any time of year. Set in Kilkenny Castle’s Parade Tower, this is a free event that suits all ages. Just be sure to bring your own cushion as the event isn’t fully seated.
