Trailer Watch: Which movie should you go see this weekend?

What’s a must-watch, and what’s a miss? We tell you.

THE WEEKEND IS coming up, and that means new movies for you to see.

But which is a must-watch, and are there any you should avoid?

We take a look.

The Big Short

Paramount Pictures / YouTube

What we know

You might usually associate director Adam McKay with absurdist comedies starring his work partner Will Ferrell, but this is him branching out into something different – and it’s after nabbing him an Oscar nomination too. Based on Michael Lewis’s book about the collapse of the housing market bubble in the USA.

What the critics say

  • “Before it gets saintly The Big Short is a big, clever chortle, full of sardonic insights into a time of woe. And with these characters they’re insider insights.” - Financial Times
  • “McKay’s attempt to cover so much ground is admirable; and the outrage that courses throughout is deeply felt.” - The Guardian

Our Brand is Crisis

Warner Bros. Pictures / YouTube

What we know

Sandra Bullock stars as a political spin doctor who heads to Bolivia to help get the ex-president elected.

What the critics say

  • “…the cast, led by Sandra Bullock, is energetic, sharp and gets a fair number of juicy bits to rock out with. But as a whole, “Our Brand is Crisis” is a messy affair that sputters along when it should be humming with assured cynical momentum.” - RogerEbert.com
  • “Bullock certainly deserves the support, drawing upon her serious and comedic sides to create a character who might as well have been plucked directly from the world of studio filmmaking” - Variety

Ride Along 2

Universal Pictures / YouTube

What we know

Ice Cube and Kevin Hart are back in this sequel, in which they play two cops who head to Miami in the run-up to Hart’s wedding.

What the critics say

  • “The film, which is likely to make at least $100m worldwide, is barely worth objecting to – it’s barely there. You could go along, but you won’t do a great deal of laughing along.” - The Telegraph
  • “The tediously over-explained plot chokes and sputters along, and many of the action set pieces simply smack of desperation, never more so than when Ben finds himself trapped in Antonio’s backyard with a jumbo alligator.” - Variety
