Majority of Irish people support suspension of water charges

Just 6% don’t know what they think on the issue.

IRISH WATER IS high up on the agenda in the ongoing government talks, with one mooted proposal being the suspension of water charges.

Now a new poll says that the majority of Irish people support the suspension of the contentious charges.

The findings are contained in a Claire Byrne Live/Amárach Research poll for TheJournal.ie that was carried out today.

Fine Gael are reported to have offered a suspension of six to nine months, but Fianna Fáil is said to want the charges suspended for five years.

The Claire Byrne Live Amárach poll asked 1,000 adults: Do you support the suspension of water charges?

The results were:

  • Yes: 65%
  • No: 29%
  • Don’t know: 6%
