THERE ARE CONFLICTING reports that the former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak may have suffered a heart attack – and may possibly even have died – in hospital.
Russia Today quotes sources in Egypt who claim that the former president, 83 – who was ousted after lengthy protests during the Arab Spring earlier this year – had suffered a heart attack in custody.
Its sources claim that Mubarak – who has been bedridden for some time, and who even had to attend his own trial on corruption and for ordering the killing of protestors – suffered a heart attack when he saw TV reports on the death of Muammar Gaddafi.
Its initial understanding was that Mubarak had died as a result, but it now claims that the former leader is in a “critical condition and may pass away at any moment”.
China’s state agency Xinhua quoted the Egyptian state-run Al-Ahram newspaper which apparently verified that Mubarak had suffered some kind of coronary incident, but said his heart had not stopped beating.
A medical source said Mubarak had undergone a routine checkup on Friday, showing an irregular and rapid heartbeat, but the source denied reports that Mubarak had been rushed to intensive care after his heart momentarily stopped beating.
RIA Novosti cited a source in Egyptian security who also denied the rumours.
Mubarak suffers from a multitude of ailments, including cancer.
